Silent Disco, Venice Home and Garden Tour… catching up with California architect Barbara Bestor

May 7th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago I did a brief write-up announcing the latest exhibition from renowned California architect and author Barbara Bestor. The design exhibition called Silent Disco opened to the public at Southern California Institute of Architecture(SCI-‐Arc). the focus on Silent  Disco’s installation was to support social and communal experiences.

“The Silent Disco for SCI Arc is a nightlife, student-oriented component of our larger project making architecture that enables people to interact and experience‘strange beauty’ in their environments.” explains Bestor.

I caught up with Barbara and she shared her thoughts on the current exhibition, Silent Disco, and what can we expect from her next….

Q).  What was the overall reception on the Silent Disco exhibit? Did the student interact as you had hoped?

Barbara Bestor
A).  I think it was good. Tons of people at the opening. The third evening-Student thesis party night collado- people were dancing. Big thing for me was that the students were using it as a hang out space during the day in their last month of school… Napping, etc. It also has an interactive iPod hookup with built in speakers so you can make your own disco! The show got extended through the end of june too, and is around the corner from moca’s street art show so a fun thing to catch.

Q). I hear your latest project “Floating Bungalow” will be shown at the Venice Garden and Home Tour. What was the inspiration behind the concept and design?

Barbara Bestor
A). Floating bungalow uses a slightly twisted abstraction of the traditional walk street bungalow and raises it up in the air. The ground floor is a big open public part of the house with lots of distinct living areas and outdoor rooms, bedrooms are upstairs in an attic like configuration.

Q). What’s next on your agenda? Hopefully you’ll get some down time for the Summer…

Barbara Bestor
A).  Up next- going to nyc for James Beard awards for Pitfire Pizza. Working a new house in the palisades and an interesting addition in Santa Monica. Looking at a couple of restaurant jobs. Hanging with my kids now that Woodbury University is out for summer ( graduation of my grad students was today!).

Sounds like some good stuff coming up! I’ll check in with you on your future projects. Have a great summer and quality with your kids. Thank you again for the chat!
